Before You File, Know This
In Iowa, the Board of Review can adjust your value in either direction once you appeal — it can be lowered, left the same, or raised. File only when the comparable-sales evidence clearly supports a lower value. This check is designed to flag those cases.
In your state, the appeal board can adjust your value in either direction, including upward. You decide whether to file. HomeTaxAppeal provides comparable-sales evidence and estimates to inform that decision; it does not control the board's determination and is not responsible for an outcome that raises your value.
How to Protest in Iowa
File your protest with your county's Board of Review by the deadline above. Contact your local county assessor's office for the specific portal or form required in your county.
If your protest is denied, escalation options include: Local assessor (informal review of the assessment notice) → local Board of Review (written protest, April 2–30) → Property Assessment Appeal Board (PAAB) — appeal within 20 days after Board of Review adjournment or May 31, whichever is later → District court (de novo; may appeal from PAAB, or bypass PAAB and appeal the Board of Review directly within 20 days after adjournment or May 31, whichever is later).
